Building an Email List
If you ever ask any seasoned expert about what they “wish” they had done sooner in their career most of the time the answer is “I wish I had started building my list sooner”. I’m no different. Today I’m going to let you in on some key things that you should know to get started on building a list that can make you thousands of dollars in the years to come.
Sign up for an autoresponder
There are a couple of choices to make when choosing an autoresponder. I’m currently using both GetResonse and Aweber, as both of them provide a high quality service for a very inexpensive price. You can start with Aweber for only $1, and Getresponse lets you try them out for free for 30 days. You should get your option bar on your blog as soon as possible so you can start collecting email addresses. And that brings us to the next important point: your blog.
Setting up your blog
If you haven’t setup a basic blog yet then you need to get on it now! One thing I always ask people when I meet them online is “do you have a blog or a website?” If the answer is “no” then I usually ask to see their Facebook, but it’s just so unprofessional if you don’t at least have some sort of a web presence. On you blog you should have an easy way for people to contact you, and of course a bunch of places for them to sign up for your email list.
How to get people to sign up to your list
Most people don’t want to give away their email list unless they are getting something for it in return. A great way to do this is by setting up something called a “lead magnet”. A lead magnet is a free gift that you can give to a subscriber in exchange for signing up for your email list. A lot of people get caught up on this and reply “but I don’t have anything to give them”. Wrong. You do. Just go to a PLR or Private Label Rights website and buy a product that lets you give it away for free. You can then slap your name on it and use that to get people to sign up for your list. However, just make sure what you’re giving away is actually valuable, as this is going to be the first impressions that your new subscriber gets from you. You want to make sure that you’re putting your best foot forward.
What should I email my list?
When I got started online I would always email my list my new blog posts. This is a great way to actually get some traffic and some eyeballs on what you’re creating. It’s also a good way to get people used to coming to your website so that eventually they’ll stop by without being prompted by an email to see what you’re up to. You might only get a few visits in the beginning, but trust me, this adds up to a lot over time.
So start now!
